Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a disease that affects a person’s long-term health and lifespan. There is no cure for CF, but it can be treated. CF is a genetic disorder caused by a gene that is passed from parent to child.

screening test is available that can tell you if you carry a mutation in the gene for CF. A mutation is a permanent change in a gene, and there are many possible mutations of the CF gene. Carrier screening allows parents-to-be to find out their chances of having a child with CF. If you are pregnant, a prenatal diagnostic test allows you to find out if your fetus actually has CF.

This pamphlet explains

  • cause, risk factors, symptoms, and treatment of CF
  • carrier screening for CF and what test results mean
  • prenatal diagnostic testing for CF
  • options for future pregnancies if both partners are carriers
