Neonatal Encephalopathy and Cerebral Palsy: Defining the Pathogenesis and Pathophysiology
This joint report between ACOG and The American Academy of Pediatrics explores the mechanisms and timing of etiologic events that may contribute to fetal and neonatal neurologic injury. The report presents evidence that most cases of cerebral palsy result from multifactorial and unpreventable causes that occur during fetal development or in the newborn after delivery, not from isolated intrapartum hypoxic events. Criteria that may be used to define (or rule out) an acute intrapartum hypoxic event sufficient to cause or suggest cerebral palsy are included. 2003, 112 pages
